POINTSPREAD 101 PART I - by Pat Rethore
When I first started working in the sportsbook industry some 16 years ago, there was one man who made the lines for all sports books, Roxy Roxborough. He owned a company called LVSC. Roxy was the best in my opinion and we felt very confident about the spreads we were receiving from him.
10 years ago, Roxy sold his company and the industry and the pointspread have never been the same.
What is the pointspread?
Most people think it is one man's opinion on what he thinks will be the final score, this is a myth.
The pointspread is a number that is designed to get people to bet both sides of a game. Ideally, you have a $10,000 bet on Team A and $10,000 on Team B. The sports book will not care who covers the spread if the money is bet evenly. They will collect the 10% vigorish or in this case $1,000.
These days getting two-way action on any game is a rarity. In next week's article, I will explain what has happened to the pointspread and who now controls it.
My record is a perfect 3-0 on teasers and 5-1 vs. the spread on this website. On the radio show I am 3-1 vs. spread and 2-0 in teasers. These won't be free much longer but this week I like the Saints -1 and San Diego -1.
Good Luck to all
