POINTSPREAD 101 PART II - by Pat Rethore
As I stated in last week's article, the pointspread has changed so much in the last ten years. After Roxy sold his company, LVSC. The spreads were now being done by gamblers.
When Roxy would send numbers out, a big move would be 1 or 1.5 points. The line did not fluctuate from the opening number. After Roxy left, those kinds of moves were commonplace. These days you see movements of 5 and 6 points in college football. You also see NFL lines moved 3 to 4 points on sides and totals.
This is now the norm not the exception. I would say that on a given Sunday 14 out of 15 games were bet one sided. Every week every sportsbook needed one side. The days of two-sided action were over. The days of holding 5 % in a football season were few and far between. What happened?
A lot of factors have made the sportsbooks less profitable and the lines not as strong. The internet and technology have made the sportsbooks vulnerable. The corporations have told us to be conservative and not to gamble. Technology has now given the sportsbook managers the ability to see what the line is throughout the city, if the book is off as compared to other casinos even a half a point; they are told to move the line.
That was the worst thing the books started to move their spread without even taking a bet. The industry and the spread have never been the same since Roxy left, we miss you.
My teaser picks on this website are a perfect 4-0.
This week we are going with the Lions PK and the Panthers +12.5
Good Luck
